Watch which sources AI search answers actually cite
Ranking and citation are two different questions. PuffinScout answers the second one: not where a page sits in a results list, but whether an AI answer actually read from it and said so.
Searched is not the same as cited
A page can sit first in a results list and never appear inside an AI-written answer, and a page with modest traffic can be the exact sentence that answer quotes. An AI search engine retrieves a handful of pages, reads them, and writes a summary; the summary names some of what it read and leaves the rest unlisted. Rank tracking was built to answer "where do I show up." Citation monitoring answers a different question: "did the answer actually use me."
What PuffinScout observes on every check
For each buying question tracked in your category, PuffinScout records the answer text, every source named or linked inside it, and whether your brand is mentioned. Repeated on a schedule, this becomes a source map you can watch move: which pages hold their place, which ones drop out, and which show up for the first time. Nothing is inferred from a search-engine ranking; it is read from the words of the answer itself.
Which engines, and how fresh
Questions are monitored across major AI search engines rather than one consumer app, because which source gets cited shifts by engine, and a single-engine read gives a false sense of certainty. Your priority questions are re-checked weekly; the wider set sweeps on a slower, plan-dependent cycle. A citation is a moving target, not a snapshot: sources get added and dropped from an answer as the pages behind them change, so a monitoring product has to check on a cadence you can actually see move.
Common questions
How is this different from rank tracking?
Rank tracking tells you where a page sits in a results list. This reads the AI answer itself and records whether it actually cited your page. A page can rank first and never appear in the answer, and a quiet page can be the exact source the answer quotes.
Which AI engines do you read?
The major AI search engines, not a single app. Each answer is logged with every source named or linked inside it, so you see the whole picture rather than the view from one tool.
How often is a page re-checked?
On a schedule you set. Your most important questions are re-read every week, and the whole set is kept current on a regular cycle, so a source dropping out shows up quickly.
Can a page be cited without ranking well?
Yes, often. An AI answer retrieves a handful of pages, reads them, and quotes some of what it read. What it quotes is decided by the words on the page, not by where the page sits in a results list.
